Haunt at Wallaton

It was a time I had boasted about Nottingham to a invited friend from london. It was early evening in November, light was dim and had slight drizzle in the air. I took Jithil my friend from London and Rahul my housemate to Wallaton hall and deer park. I was receiving rebuke in pseudo london accent from Jithil who adopted this style by working in coffe shop for being late . I took them in a bus and we reached Wallaton hall and deer park. Park was a huge area covering 500 acres of land with Wallaton hall and huge deer population. Park was confined with huge compound wall around, We opened the gate and went inside. It was a perfect location for shooting hound of Baskervilles, The Park which span 500 acres with trees in fall looked absolutely stunning. Any click from any camera by the worst photographer will make a good scenery over here. We started to walk towards hall through the big lawn. Jithil started to sing old malyalam songs as he realized that his voice has gone better with a throat infection. We all had popped up with creativity seeing this panoramic view of Wallaton park. By walking a mile we reached Wallaton hall, which was dark and haunted, suddenly lights were on and this 15 th century structure with central hall and four towers around was magnificent. This hall have the history of many ghost activities and people come here for ghost hunt , some activities include door slamming at people face with no draft to account for it, groans had been heard and people also have experienced pushing and touching. We had lot of wit and tried our best to have ghost hunt experience. Jithil a self acclaimed professional photographer who was very proud of his photographic abilities was capturing the night beauty of the Elizabethan architectecture. Now it was very dark and we felt bit wired staying alone in deserted place. We were concerned about the huge population of deers in the park which can become bit violent at mating seasons, So we decided to walk back. We had lots of laugh and wit and my friends who rebuke me had a great experience and thanked me for coming late as we enjoyed beauty of solitude in this 500 acres of land. In a group it is a fun to be here but now in dark this palace is very deserted. We came back and reached the entrance and found that gates has been locked from outside. It was pitch dark and we really dont know what to do. We decided to call police then we read the timing of entrance and exit , the last exit was 5 pm and it was already 7 pm ,So we may end up in real trouble for breaking the law. There was no other option other than staying in this park whole night. Then we decided to jump the wall and we climbed wall , but we were reluctant to jump it was too high and we sat on the wall. The other side of the wall was a road and people going in bus was staring at three of us sitting on huge wall at night looking totally confused. There were very few by walkers on road and after some time a British guy was walking and we just called him for help and told our situation. He was just laughing at us and even he didn’t know a way out. The only way out is to jump down and that will end up in a bone fracture. There was electric post near by so the brtish guy told us to do a monkey jump from the wall to the post and slide down through the post. So Jithil was first to do the monkey jump was able to able to succeed because of his genetics. Now I was wearing a long coat with a scarf , I removed it and gave to jithil with all my kalari skills I jumped. Its now Rahul’s turn he got a very tight pant so was not able to stretch his legs for the jump had to loosen his pants and jumped. So great evening ended with our pants dirty and we headed to Desi express.

Memories never die

by Mithun Parambath

Memories never die, memories linger with you wherever you go. It make you laugh, cry and sometimes give a new energy to live. Beautiful memories of childhood are always precious to everyone .I often go back to my nostalgic childhood normally when I am lonely. Those memories of climbing trees ,throwing at mangoes and playing in water which I had in my childhood are a dream childhood for many of my friends. Memories of my childhood at my old ancestral home in a remote village was a great treasure and legacy that will remain in my heart.

Climbing mango tree ,eating the raw mangoes with salt ,chewing cashew fruit by holding the cashew nut, Burning out the outer cashew nut shell in the kitchen and eating the nut, then collecting cashew nut for selling and getting crackers for vishu are colourful and ever lasting memories of a lifetime. Born in family where coconut used to be the main income of the family, We have a breaking of coconut every month after removing it exocarp, it was always a great opportunity to drink coconut water how much ever you want. The day on which coconuts are taken from attam (roof of Kitchen) ,I used to wait at the bottom to open those coconut to get pongu. It is one of the most tasty sweet I ever had. Coconut, cashew nut, greenery, my cousins who come to my house for vacations, my fight with them are all memories that never pass on in a life

I believe I am greatly gifted when I see children playing video games and watching cartoons today. They are missing a great childhood before TV and computer by seeing and living in a to fantasy world. I was not able to watch a cartoon until I was thirteen and at thirteen I was not interested to watch one as we only got a TV at that time.

Beauty of the monsoons in kerala can be enjoyed by sitting in the kolayi (varanda) of a padinjata house, the streamline flow of water dripping through slopping roof to ground is a delight to watch, a feeble breeze with cold water give a prick sensation on the skin.sleeping on a cotton bed hearing the noise of rain in pitch darkness as electricity connection normally go with the rain was always cozy and snugy. This is a great life and it is beautiful because of those memories that never die and they are the only comrades who remain with you all your life.
